HOW TO BE INVOLVED WHILE WORKING REMOTELY

In recent years, remote work has become a favorable part of most companies. It widens the search for candidates and allows businesses to find talent outside their zip code. However, it can be intimidating to log on and be met with an empty inbox.

Luckily, there are habits you and your team can practice to stay connected!

Weekly Meetings

In most collaborative environments, meetings are essential for keeping everyone on task. You could ask your boss if it’s okay to hold a meeting at the beginning and/or end of your first week so you can see and speak with your new co-workers.

If management doesn’t require weekly meetings, you could also ask others in your department to join a video call and brainstorm ideas. However, these calls don’t have to be limited to work-related conversations.

Joining a co-worker for a virtual coffee or lunch date is a great way to bond! This keeps things transparent and friendly, and it lets the team know you’re always open to chat. The more you reach out, the more engagement you’ll receive in return.

Message Boards & Group Chats

Every company uses different software to communicate. Some common ones are Google Workspace and Microsoft Teams, but they aren’t the only programs available. You could use:

Texting is also an option, but it’s not as fast as the other options. Some co-workers also may not have smartphones, so be sure to ask them how you can make it accessible for everyone. Bonus points if the program has platforms for smartphones and computers!

Use this chat to ask questions and update the team, but also have fun with it. GIFs are a quick way to have fun during the work day. You could also post polls and suggestions for fun activities. It’s a free and easy way to stay connected.

Visit the Office (If You Can)

Some remote workers have offices nearby, making it easier to meet with co-workers. If it is feasible and safe to do so, schedule a visit to the office every now and then. You can catch up with your team and step away from the computer for a while.

Engage with Your Coworkers Outside the Office

If you’re unable to do this, revisit the first step. There are tons of team-building activities that can be done remotely:

  • Weekly Meditation Group

  • Coffee Chats

  • Game Night

  • Cooking Tutorials

The possibilities are endless. The most important aspect is strengthening your team’s bond. Not only will it help you feel included, but it will make everyone’s workload feel a bit lighter. In these trying times, reaching out can make all the difference.
