How to Write a Job Description

The Basics

A job description acts as the beginning of the roadmap to a potential career. It lists the duties, responsibilities, and expectations of the position. Companies often include their core values as well, allowing the applicant to picture themselves working there.

But how can we write stronger and exciting job descriptions to attract the right candidates?

Keep It Brief

Job seekers are tasked with browsing hundreds of job postings, altering their cover letters, and keeping track of their application statuses. In an already overwhelming process, it’s best to keep things simple.

Short paragraphs, bulleted lists, and concise sentences (when possible) will make job postings easier to read. Headings and hyperlinks can also be added to keep things organized.

What Are Candidates Looking For In A Job Description?

Candidates want to know what their role entails within the first few paragraphs.

A job description should include:

• A list of major and minor duties

• A brief overview of the company’s mission

• Preferred / desired skills

• Flexibility of work hours / working remotely

• Contact information / hiring manager’s contact information

The Code of Conduct, Dress Code, and other regulations can be saved for the end of the description in their own separate paragraphs.

If you feel like some of these rules can be saved for the interview or training, state that candidates will learn this information during their interview and/or training.

Have Fun With It!

Don’t be afraid to pose questions and scenarios regarding your company, either. Phrases like, “Want to join a fast-paced and friendly community of like-minded people? You’ve come to the right place!” give job-seekers a quick glimpse into your work culture.

Lastly, it’s important not to take writing a job description too seriously. If you’re having fun with it and being authentic, candidates will be able to tell through your writing! Work as a team and put your best foot forward.
